When religion grows in age, faith turns into dogma, and experience is replaced by book-knowledge, virtue by adherence to rules, devotion by ritual, meditation by metaphysical speculation. The time is then ripe for a rediscovery of truth and a fresh attempt to give it expression in life. - Lama Govinda
I agree.
But: The "truth", which needs to be "rediscovered" because it has been incrusted and buried by religion, is logically unrediscoverable via religion.
"Rediscovering" truth is not going back to the (historical) roots of (any) religion.
Considering the diversity of religions, the word "religion" in the above statement is a placeholder, a variable which various beliefs concerning truth can be assigned to. Therefore, assuming that religion be a source of truth, "truth" would be an iridescent term, meaning something induced at that, something which is premised on something beyond truth.
I, however, consider religion only an established (and, in many cases, institutionalised) interpretation of the non-inducible truth; for that reason, I demand from every religion: utmost humbleness.
